Living On Campus- Housing Requirements
Living on campus immerses you in a world of collaborative learning and living. Students who live on campus are more likely to get involved, be satisfied with their experience, and more likely to graduate. All students attending °ÄÃÅ¿ª½±½á¹û are required to live on campus for 2 years, 4 full time semesters (excluding summer). Below you will find information about how to apply for Housing and the Housing Application process.
How to °ÄÃÅ¿ª½±½á¹û to Live On Campus
Living on campus is a convenient, affordable option for Racers, with a wide variety of residence halls available to fit your budget. The Housing Application is available online for students to apply. Student will need to log into their account and the link to the Housing application is on the Home page in the middle column at the bottom. Housing Exemption Application
Students can apply to be exempt from living on campus. If approved for a Housing Exemption, the approval is for one academic year. If the student is required to live on campus in the next academic year, the student will have to submit a new Housing Exemption. New students starting in Spring semester are only approved for Spring semester and will have to submit a new Housing Exemption for the next academic year. The following are reasons for exemptions:
- Students who have completed four (4) full time semesters living in a residence hall on campus
- Students who have reached their twenty-first (21) birthday prior to the first day of classes of the semester they are applying for the exemption.
- Served two (2) years of military services including National Guard
- Married and/or Living with dependent children
- Graduated from a high school located within 50 miles of main campus in Murray, Kentucky, AND commuting from their parent's or legal guardian's primary home. Must complete both the exemption and the commuter notary form.
- Students attending at least 50% of their courses at one of the Murray State Regional Campuses.
- Students enrolled in 100% online course
- Student studying abroad
- Students who have completed four (4) full time post-secondary education semesters post high school graduation (excluding summer)
- Students with a disability and/or medical reason (personal statement and medical documentation required)
In order to be considered for a Housing Exemption, a student must do one of the following:
What is the process for obtaining an exemption if I am a commuter?
- Complete the Housing Exemption Application.
- Complete the Commuter Notary Form
- The Housing Office will verify the High School you graduated from and the parent’s/guardian's address.
The student will receive notification of the decision to their Murray State email.
What is the process for obtaining an exemption if I am married, have a child, or I have two years' active military service?
- Complete the Housing Exemption Application
- Submit the necessary supporting documentation (i.e. Marriage License, Birth Certificate, Military Orders, other applicable documents).
The student will receive notification of the decision to their Murray State email.
What is the process for obtaining an exemption for a medical reason?
- Complete the Housing Exemption Application
- Medical documentation from medical professional on letterhead.
- Submit documentation which supports the exemption request. Examples of documentation
may include:
- Personal statement addressing the reasoning you are needing to live off campus
- Letters of support from parent or guardian
- Other applicable documents
The student will receive notification of the decision to their Murray State email.
What is the process for obtaining an exemption for a reason that is not included in the criteria listed on the On-Campus Housing Exemption Application?
- Complete the Housing Exemption Application
- Submit documentation which supports the exemption request. Examples of documentation
may include:
- Letter addressing the reasoning you are needing to live off campus
- Letters of support from parent or guardian
- Other applicable documents
The student will receive notification of the decision to their Murray State email.
Deadlines to submit a Housing Exemption Application:
All Housing Exemption Applications must be submitted prior to the first day of classes of the semester you are requesting an application.

How do I appeal the decision of my exemption request?
Appeals must be submitted in writing along with any supporting documentation. The student should submit their appeal by emailing msu.housingexemptions@murraystate.edu.
