Student Organizations
Global Languages sponsors two student organizations. Alpha Mu Gamma is an honors society for students who perform well in their language classes, while the International Cultures and Languages Association (ICALA) is open to all students. If you would like more information about the events and activities of these groups, please contact the group advisors, listed below:
Alpha Mu Gamma
Advisor: Dr. Roxane Riegler (rriegler@murraystate.edu)
Alpha Mu Gamma is the National Honorary Society for Foreign Languages. It was established at Los Angeles City College on April 29, 1931. The name "Alpha Mu Gamma" is composed of the names of the initial Greek letters found in the phrase "Emf Mouse Glisson," meaning "For the Muse of Languages." Alpha Mu Gamma sponsors many different activities throughout the year and initiates new students in the Fall. In order to qualify for initiation, a student:
- must have Sophomore, Junior or Senior standing
- must have completed at least two semesters of college foreign language with at least two grades of "A" in unrepeated courses
- must have a minimum overall GPA of 3.00.
ICALA (International Cultures and Languages Association)
This group is temporarily inactive, but may be revived in the future. ICALA hosts cultural activities and social events for Murray State language students and the broader community. Membership is free and is open to all students interested in foreign languages and cultures. Events include Mardi Gras, International Tea Tasting, Origami Night and Chips and Salsa Dancing.
