Work Study

The F-1 or J-1 visa allows on-campus employment for a maximum of 20 hours per week while classes are in session, and up to 40 hours per week during university vacation periods.

Such work-study positions cannot be guaranteed, however, so applicants cannot depend on student employment as a source of financial support.

International students may work off-campus only with the permission of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). For information about off-campus employment for F-1or J-1 students, contact Misty Brown Lanham (mbrown@murraystate.edu) or Dr Bill Mckibben (bmckibben@murraystate.edu).

A variety of student work positions are available at MSU, and IIS will assist students in learning more about employment options during orientation after arrival.

Graduate Assistantships

Students admitted to graduate programs may compete for graduate assistantships.

Most academic departments award a limited number of graduate assistantships to highly qualified students. Several of these are open to applicants who have been admitted to the graduate program but have not yet enrolled.

Applicants interested in departmental assistantships may contact their departments directly before they arrive. Graduate assistantships carry work responsibilities, such as research or teaching duties. The award provides a stipend as well as a reduction of out-of-state tuition. For information, contact your graduate program director.
