Ezra Burton is an incoming freshman at Murray State whose interests include computer engineering, theatre, and choral singing. Meet this fourth-generation Racer!

Tell us a little about yourself!

My name is Ezra Burton, originally from Madisonville but now living in Lancaster. I graduated from West Jessamine High School and am excited for my freshman year at Murray. I love to sing and act in both theatre and choir along with watching shows and movies. I especially love to discuss and debate about most any topic, nothing better than learning from a new perspective.

What made you want to be in the Honors College?

The Honors College allows for many opportunities for students to develop their knowledge and flexibility. Honors seminars keep up the pace that many AP level students have grown used to while lowering class sizes to make every session more personal. And the study abroad program allows students to experience diverse cultures while still taking relevant courses.

What鈥檚 your major, and what sparked your interest in the field? What would you like to do after graduation?

My major is Engineering Physics with a Computer Science track, which delves into computer engineering. My interest started in middle school and has continued till now because of working with code. Whether you have to describe every single movement or use sensors to make the machine more intelligent, coding can be such a satisfying experience. And after college I hope to work with developing and updating code.

Aside from studying, how do you like to spend your time?

Besides hanging out with friends I am so excited to sing with the male choir this semester, Una Voce. Despite meeting only twice a week, getting to practice my musicality will always be nice. Along with that, seeing the many clubs and groups around campus.

Why did you choose Murray State?

While it was not my main reason for choosing Murray, I am a fourth generation Murray student in my family. My Great-Grandmother attended Murray when it was just a teaching school, now I have joined the class of 2028 after my grandfather, mother, and father have all become alumni. Even with that, Murray was my choice because no other college in the state has such a small, close-knit feel. It turns students from a statistic into actual people who have influence and make impacts.

What aspect of college are you most excited about?

Meeting new, lifelong friends that have different perspectives and help everyone in the group grow. Instead of going to school with the same people for 12 years like at home, we are meeting new people who are both brilliant and insightful. Hopefully, we can come together as a community of understanding and kindhearted individuals instead of sowing hate and discourse based on our differences.
